Six Weeks of Colour, Creativity and Laughter

Over the past six weeks, our studio has been bursting with colour, creativity and laughter as we explored a wonderfully playful mixed-media project on my recent course at The Colour Factory.

Using a wide range of materials including dye-based watercolours, water-soluble pastels, acrylic paint, foam rollers, markers and fineliners, we experimented with painting all sorts of fruit, using layering, blending, texture and mark-making.

The course was all about letting go of perfection, embracing curiosity and enjoying the process of making art.

The Materials We Used One of the joys of this course was the breadth of materials on offer.

Working with:

  • Dye-based watercolours (for intense, vivid colour on paper)

  • Water-soluble pastels

  • Acrylic paint

  • Foam rollers

  • Markers and fineliners

Each material brought its own character to the work — and the combinations produced results that surprised even the most experienced students in the room.

The Highlight:

Our Joyful Fruit Bowl Project Without doubt, the highlight of the course was our joyful Fruit Bowl project. Each student created a collection of colourful fruit studies on paper, exploring expressive brushwork, bold colour combinations and playful textures. Working from the same selection of materials, everyone developed their own unique fruit elements, full of personality and character. The magic happened when these individual studies were cut out and arranged into painted Delft-inspired fruit bowls, in just 2 colours; ultramarine and cyan. What began as separate fruity components transformed into vibrant collages bursting with colour, movement and fun

What Made This Course Special

One of the things I loved most about this project was how accessible it was. Whether students were experienced artists or complete beginners, everyone embraced the playful nature of the process. There was a real sense of shared enjoyment as we experimented together and celebrated the wonderfully different outcomes that emerged. Although we all started with the same materials and prompts, every finished piece reflected the personality of its maker.

The results were joyful, expressive and completely individual. Have a Go at Your Own Version Take a look at some of the beautiful fruit bowls above.
