Beautiful Beetroots & the Joy of Painting Root Vegetables
My famous beetroots — bold, textured and brimming with life. These juicy roots have become a bit of a signature for me, celebrating nature’s beauty one layer at a time.
There’s something wonderfully grounding about root vegetables — the earthy colours, the sculptural shapes, and the way they capture the beauty of what grows beneath the surface.
I’ve always loved painting them. My famous beetroot series began as an experiment in mixed media, and it’s become one of my most-loved subjects to teach in the studio.
There’s a richness in their colours — deep magentas, soft ochres, flashes of green — that invites you to explore texture and tone in such a playful way. Whether I’m layering acrylics, splashing ink, or adding bursts of collage, every beetroot takes on a character of its own. They’re full of life, full of story — and full of colour!
At my Mixed Media Sundays in Winchester, we dive into all of this. These one-day workshops at The Colour Factory Studios are designed for anyone who wants to loosen up, get playful, and discover their own unique creative style. We explore collage, acrylics, print and ink — all the techniques I use in my own studio practice — to bring these beautiful root vegetables to life on paper.
And of course, it’s not all serious art-making. There’s plenty of laughter, inspiration, tea, coffee, and cake along the way! It’s a day to reconnect with creativity, meet like-minded people, and simply enjoy the process of painting.
Whether you’re a seasoned painter or picking up a brush for the first time, there’s something magical about capturing the vibrant energy of a humble beetroot. So if you’ve ever fancied getting hands-on with mixed media and seeing where your imagination takes you, come and join me for a Sunday in Winchester — and let’s get painting!
Whether you’re new to painting or ready to experiment with mixed media, I’d love to welcome you to the studio.
