Permission to Play (Your Creative Reminder)

Letting Go of Perfection in Art

I’m not really a fan of New Year’s resolutions, but if you’re going to have one, here’s an idea to kick-start 2026. Give yourself permission to play.

Creativity lives in all of us, whether or not we call ourselves artists. It shows up when we’re relaxed, curious, and willing to experiment, not when we’re trying to get things perfect. As children, we painted, drew, and made things without fear or judgement. We trusted our instincts and enjoyed the process.

Somewhere along the way, many of us tightened up. We started worrying about doing things “right” and forgot how freeing it can be to simply have a go. Creativity thrives on looseness, fun, and a bit of silliness.

So let this be your reminder for the year ahead. Play more. Make marks without overthinking. Try things out. You already have the ability. Sometimes all it takes is giving yourself permission to use it. So, here’s to a fabulously fun and creative 2026!
